A total stock market index tracks the share price values of all of the stocks listed on the U.S. stock exchanges. The index is a representation of the total value of the U.S. stock market. The Wilshire 5000 total market index includes stocks of all valuations from the largest large caps to the smallest small caps. The thick bright yellow line in the bottom right chart is the actual annualized return of the stock market over 8 years. We use "Wilshire 5000 Full Cap Price Index" to do the actual return calculation. We can see the calculations largely predicted the trend in the returns of the stock market.
